Welcome to Scouting

Welcome New Youth Member
Welcome to the Family!
Thank you for your interest in Scouting. The Mayflower Council is ready to help you along in the initial steps of your family’s journey!
By filling out your application form, you have shown a willingness to enhance your child’s formal education with an outside-the-classroom experience that has shown its worth for well over 110 years. Through outdoor activities, group experiences, and small group exercises, your Scout will learn much about your community, the United States, and the world. They will also build important character traits and skills, which cannot be replicated in a classroom setting.
Moreover, your child (and you too!) will create friendships that will last a lifetime.
Of course, there are many resources available to your Scout (and their parent or guardian), but for now, we think it best to concentrate on getting signed up (you’re almost there) and getting suited up.
You can find in-person Scout Shops in Southborough and Woburn, Massachusetts:
- New England Scout Shop, Southborough, Mass.
- Woburn Scout Shop, Woburn, Mass.
- New England Base Camp Scout Shop, Milton, Mass.
And you can also purchase items online, via ScoutShop.org.
Meanwhile, “be prepared” for your unit’s leadership to be in touch, and “do your best” to be patient with us as we sort out the paperwork. Keep in mind, all units have an additional fee above and beyond the national and council dues. However, in comparison with so many of the youth programs you’ll come across, our year-long costs are quite affordable.
Finally, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Welcome New Adult Leader
Welcome Future Leader!
We thank you for your interest in Scouting! Becoming a volunteer within the Mayflower Council, especially for your local Unit, is one of the most important and rewarding volunteer opportunities anyone can undertake.
As the founder of the World Scouting Movement, Lord Baden-Powell (BP for short), once said, “There is no teaching to compare with example.”
By filling out your application form, you have shown your commitment to lead by example, and we truly appreciate your initial time and effort. With that in mind, we would like to ask you to do a couple more things as you prepare to take a role in your pack, post, troop, crew, or ship.
First, if you haven’t already done so, please fill out a Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) form. Second, please also take Youth Protection Training (YPT).
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) explains the need for CORI and YPT on its website:
True youth protection can be achieved only through the focused commitment of everyone in Scouting. It is the mission of Youth Protection volunteers and professionals to work within the Boy Scouts of America to maintain a culture of Youth Protection awareness and safety at the national, territory, area, council, district, and unit levels.
Of course, the old adage of “one hour a week” doesn’t necessarily resemble your modern commitment to Scouting. However, we expect our online YPT training to take less than 75-minutes and the CORI form much less. “Scout’s honor!”
Meanwhile, “be prepared” for your unit’s leadership to be in touch, and “do your best” to be patient with us as we sort out the paperwork. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
